Florence Kelley Essays - Child Labor In The United States
Florence Kelley Essays - Child Labor In The United States Florence Kelley Introduction Florence Kelley was born in Philadelphia in 1859 into a cultured and affluent family. Her family was actively devoted to social reform. Her father, Congressman William (Pig Iron) Kelley, fought passionately to persuade government to uphold the rights of the poor and weak. He strongly believed that every child in America, whether born rich or poor should be afforded the same opportunities and chances in life. Florence was conditioned from a very early age to despise the sight of little children hard at work. Her father was a dominating influence throughout Florence's life. He taught her to read at the age of seven. He provided books that focused on child labor and children who were far less fortunate1. He took her on a midnight tour of factories where young boys helped in the manufacturing of steel and glass. There she witnessed the deplorable and dangerous conditions children were forced to work under. She often contends that through this experience, she developed her enthusiasm to advocate for child labor reform. She wrote while still a very young woman, We that are strong, let us bear the infirmities of the weak.2 ____________________ 1 Goldmark, Josephine Clara, Florence Kelley's Life Story: Impatient Crusader. 1953. Florence's mother, Caroline Bartram-Bonsall, lost her parents at a very young age. Caroline's adoptive family Isaac and Elizabeth Pugh, were close friends of her parents. It was through them that Florence was connected to Sarah Pugh. Florence's Great-Aunt Sarah was a leading abolitionist who advocated on behalf of the women's suffrage movement, the oppression of women, free trade, peace, and a single standard of morals for men and women. Sarah was feisty and strong. She confided to Florence that she never used sugar and she only wore linen undergarments. Her reasoning, she explained was cotton was grown by slaves and sugar also. 3 I decided many years ago never to use either and to bring these facts to the attention of my friends. It was through these influences that Florence developed her passion for socialism. Florence was mature beyond her years. Her school attendance was often interrupted due to illness. She was highly susceptible to infection. To make up for her sporadic attendance she was educated mainly at home and spent endless hours in her father's library reading. 4 In 1876 Kelley enrolled at Cornell University; she was among the first generation of college-educated women. She graduated from Cornell in 1882 earning her Bachelor of Science degree. ____________________ 3 Goldmark, Josephine Clara, Florence Kelley's Life Story: Impatient Crusader. 1953. She taught for a brief period and then enrolled in postgraduate studies at the University of Zurich in Switzerland where women were permitted to obtain postgraduate degrees. There she applied her developed passions for Socialism. 5 In following her new commitment she married a medical student, a radical Russian Jew named Lazare Wischnewetzky. Soon after she gave birth to their first child. It was also during that period that she made what is still considered the finest translation of Friedrich Engels' book The Condition of the Working Class in England. She saw to its publication and promotion in the United States and began corresponding with Engels. In 1886, Kelley returned with her family to New York. She quickly gave birth to two more children. She tried and failed to make a place for herself in the largely German-speaking, male dominated Socialist Labor Party. At the end of 1891 her marriage deteriorated. To escape her mentally unstable husband, who had grown violent, she fled with her children to Jane Addams's Hull House in Chicago. ______________________ 5*biography.com/cgi-bin/biomain.cgi*, Kelley, Florence (Molthrop) For the next eight years she lived and worked with Hull House residents and supporters. Personal Statement to Savannah College of Art and Design
To Savannah College of Art and Design - Personal Statement Example I extended this knowledge freely to my colleagues and helped them set up their own franchise business too. Being their business consultant and a marketing planner gave me a sense of fulfillment as I saw their businesses doing well also. Knowing that diversity in languages is a barrier in communication, I took up a Spring International Language Program in Denver, Colorado. This helped me communicate more efficiently to prospective clients of my Event Management Company particularly to foreign clients. This language knowledge would help me understand school assignments and communicate with professors and co-students more clearly and will not be a bother in my study. I do not consider this as a limitation of my ability, but rather a motivating factor to reach out and be able to adopt the campus culture. My hands-on experience of my own Event Management Company in Saudi stimulated me to think of innovative ways to work to present events in a more swaying and persuasive manner. This motivation led me to pursue a career in motion design. The area that fascinates me most is how ideas are transformed into promotion, advertising and art with the use of principles and tools of motion media. The use of technology in transforming the works in animation, and on line promotion is an area where I would like to focus on. As I thread along the campus life once again, I am sure the wealth of my experiences in the marketing field will be a dynamic factor of guidance in my chosen profession. My ultimate goal is to finish higher studies that will help me explore more ideas and opportunities that will ultimately benefit my business and help me attain the next stages of my career and personal ambition. I hope to settle my passion for arts in your school as I believe you prescribe the same

Investments in Information Technology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Investments in Information Technology - Essay Example Heinrich and Simchi-Levi (2005) answer the question whether IT investments really pay off: "The answer is yes-only if solid business processes are in place." Thus, the success of any IT strategy is highly dependent on the integration of business processes within the organization and its various supply chain factors. Information technology strategies are directly linked to the company's supply chain. As the supply chain is composed of stakeholders who are directly related to the operations of the company, the installation of IT software and tool will have an impact on them. In return, the organization bottom line will also benefit or be harmed by any IT strategy in place. Investments in IT generate a lot of advantages in a company's supply chain. However, this is only true with the premise that the appropriate level of business process is in place. As the study of Heinrich and Simchi-Levi proves, information technology goes hand in hand business process maturity in increasing the efficiency and profitability of business organization. Investment in IT without integrating the supply chain by sharing the data in internal and external stakeholders will render useless.

Cisco Systems` :: essays research papers
1)à à à à à The relationship between information systems, Internet Technology and Ciscoââ¬â¢s business strategy was quite intriguing. Ciscoââ¬â¢s company worked hand in hand directly with the Internet and their IS system was supported by almost 45% by digital means. Their sales were all Internet driven by almost half of their production. 2)à à à à à Cisco is a digital firm in the many senses, while John Chambers will adamantly defer the fact that their company relies directly on software (digital) it is my opinion that from viewing on the proceedings it appears to all eyes that their structure is almost 75% if not more digital. Their training, applications, update forms, orders and accessibility options are all based through the Internet or some digital means. 3)à à à à à Ciscoââ¬â¢s reliance on information systems and the Internet was a great success until about November 2000 when there was the first 10% decline in sales. By December 15 Chambers realized that his ales were going down the drain. Finally in August 2001 Cisco underwent a makeover that changed the way that they depended upon the Internet and IS. Their forecasts were no longer FULLY based upon this information; rather they were used as in centralizing market analysis and finding new methods of technologies to network their company. 4)à à à à à Cisco reacted so slowly to the deteriorating economic condition because they had continued to aggressively expand and they had also increased their market shares. What really influenced the way Cisco responded to the economic condition was the decline of 2/3ââ¬â¢s in the technological advances in the NASDAQ. While other companies were falling around them Cisco stood strong. They continued to pour themselves heart and soul into their company. Nortel Networks ââ¬â Ciscoââ¬â¢s rival fell largely in the market, and they continued to expand. 5)à à à à à I believe that Chambers and Cisco could/should have done would have been to pull back on their large ââ¬Å"all-outâ⬠pushing the production ââ¬Å"buckâ⬠. If Chambers had not have pushed the 600 million dollar contracts for orders of unmade parts and materials I believe that the company would have held stronger.

Microbiology Bacteria Paper
I would not say science is storybook fun, but who knew it become a mystery. Trying to find out what was in our number seven vial would become a battle we were willing to take on. As I began the test of deciding if our little bacteria friend was gram positive or negative, Jordan my science teammate, was putting together a smear plate. In as little as ten minutes we had discovered by the pink oval shapes we were observing, our microbe friend was a gram negative rod. We had narrowed our search down to five! We decided next we would do oxygen along with a motility test. Along with those, we did a fermentation investigation. These tests would narrow our pursuit down even further. Unfortunately these tests take time. The following day, we curiously went to our ââ¬Ëstashââ¬â¢ of experiments. As we observed we soon realized our little bacteria was a non-motile, facultative anaerobe. With the observation of acid and gas formation, this microorganism was able to catabolize glucose, lactose and fructose. Our smear plate, with white convex muciod looking colonies confirmed our suspicion. We were now looking at vial number seven with anew respect, he now had a name, and that name was Klebsiella pneumonia. Read also Lab 2 Biology Now that our mystery microbe had a proper name, where would we find it? This bacterium, I found out is ubiquitous in nature, meaning it seems to be present, everywhere at the same time. Just about anywhere you would step, touch or see in nature you could bet this little guy is there. Its family is abundant in soil, water and vegetables. But they have cousins, uncles, second cousins etc. just about everywhere else. ââ¬Å"Wowâ⬠, was all I could muster. But our friend not only had a large family in nature, this microbe also found residence inside the human body. The respiratory, intestinal, and urogenital tracts are a favored neighborhood for this microscopic organism. This tiny microbe seems to find just about any region environmentally friendly. Not only is it very versatile in were it lives, I would soon learn it was also just as versatile in what is able to do. This small bacterium could devastate the human body if allowed to. Our secret microbe was considered to be an opportunistic human pathogen, meaning that under certain conditions it may cause disease. All this little guy needed was the perfect scenario and he could ââ¬Ëthriveââ¬â¢ in only a way harmful bacterium could. Read Chapter 8 Microbial Genetics Persons with underlying diseases such as alcoholism or lung infections were some of their favorite captives. Along with people who are hospitalized and receive invasive procedures, being their other prime hostages. These guys are on the top ten most known list of nosocomial infection pathogens. Trying to get rid of this pathogen is no easy feat either! Once this type is let in he really does not want to leave. Of course, the first attack to rid the body of this pathogen is to use a timely and aggressive treatment of antibiotics. Even that though, can prove to not be beneficial. Since these little critters are proven to be resistant, meaning, they develop ways to inactivate or neutralize the antibiotic. Many cases have to be treated with cephalosporinââ¬â¢s and aminoglycosides to give the bacteria a two-pronged attack. This bacterium certainly has a powerful army when dispersed. But how does this little fella do this? Well, the pathology for it to become Pneumonia develops when the bacilli invade and multiply within the alveolar spaces.General Biology Ii Study Guide (Online Class) The pulmonary parenchyma becomes consolidated, and the mucoid exudates that fill the alveoli is controlled by macrophages, fibrin, and edema fluid. Neutrophils, our bodies own fighting soldiers are inhibited by a neutral polysaccharide in the capsule of this bacterium. Numerous encapsulated gram-negative bacilli appear free in the exudates and in alveolar macrophages. Then exudates accumulate and the alveolar wall becomes compacted and healthy tissue starts to degrade. This area, where the microbe does its best work, is the area of gas exchange with the blood, a vital part of the human anatomy/physiology. So when this microbe is able to take over, a hefty defense force of antibacterial agents have to come to the battle. Antibiotics themselves though have a become an overused tool. This has become a growing problem and many actions have now come into play to stop the abuse of these products. Some would argue a little too late. This lapse of poor judgment has led to the numerous strains of antibiotic resistant infections. Klebsiella pneumonia is one of the leading culprits. The thing is though, bacteria does not know its playing a dangerous game with us, all bacteria is trying to do is win.References Klebsiella pneumonia . Denying The Holocaust The Growing Assault On Truth And...
Deborah Lipstadt, author of Denying the Holocaust: the Growing Assault on Truth and Memory, recently gave a TED Talk entitled ââ¬Å"Behind the Lies of Holocaust Denialâ⬠about her experience with being chosen to write the book, conducting the research for it, and enduring the libel lawsuit against her that resulted. The book addressed Holocaust deniers, those who insist the Holocaust didnââ¬â¢t occur, and her speech mainly addressed how truth and facts are, as she put it, ââ¬Å"under assaultâ⬠(Lipstadt 11:58). The fifteen-minute impassioned speech employed the three persuasive strategies: Logos, by using straightforward facts; Ethos, by being established a well-respected author and college professor; and Pathos, by appealing to emotion throughâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Toward the end of her speech when discussing whether or not everything is open to debate, Lipstadt refers to the idea that there are ââ¬Å"indisputable facts, objective truths,â⬠such as Gal ileoââ¬â¢s insistence that the earth revolved around the sun (Lipstadt 14:07). Deborah Lipstadtââ¬â¢s authority on the subject of Jewish history showcases the persuasive strategy of Ethos because she is presented as a trustworthy messenger. She was an assistant professor of Near Eastern Studies at UCLA from 1979 to 1985 before becoming an associate professor of religion and later Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies at Emory University in Atlanta. In 1994, President Clinton appointed Lipstadt to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. Already a published author and columnist for The Jewish Spectator (Moore), Lipstadt talked in her TED Talk about being approached by two respected historians of the Holocaust who asked her to work on a project that included researching Holocaust deniers (Lipstadt 2:28). This research resulted in the book Denying the Holocaust: the Growing Assault on Truth and Memory, which was published in 1993 and received the Nation al Jewish Book Honor Award in 1994 (Moore).
